Setting
up
a Wireless Network
- There
are two basic types of wireless (Wi-Fi) protocols.
- 802.11b has a
data rate of 11Mbps (11 million bits per second)
- 802.11g has a
date rate of 54 Mbps (54 million bits per second)
- Appliances
that are 802.11g can usually work fine for 802.11b computers.
- There are two
type of wireless appliances.
- Wireless router
or gateway
- A gateway
assumes no existing gateway and usually also has ports for 2-4 wired
computers. This is best for a brand new home network.
- Wireless access
point
- This type of
appliance assumes that a network already exists and this will plug
directly into an ethernet port on that network.
- Do not get
this if you do not have an existing network already.
- If
you
just setup your wireless out of the box, without
enabling encryption, anyone in your area can access your network and
snoop!!!
